Local Genealogy 101

Your family tree is calling! The DeKalb County History Center is inviting the community to discover the rich genealogical resources in the History Center’s collection on Saturday, October 3 at 12:00 pm.

The History Center’s archives contain thousands of items documenting the people, places, businesses, and events that have shaped DeKalb County. From photographs, newspapers, maps, school records, and city directories these resources help researchers uncover the stories connect us to our ancestors.

Cathy Fawcett, History Center Genealogy Researcher, will introduce participants to the History Center’s research collections and demonstrate how archival materials can answer questions about DeKalb County’s past.

“A wealth of genealogy materials are preserved here,” said Rob Glover, History Center Archives Director. “A lifetime of documents, from birth records and school yearbooks to early wills and obituaries and everything in between, can help you find your ancestors.”

This session will highlight the variety of resources available at the History Center’s Joiner History Room, explain how to begin a research project, and provide practical tips for locating information in local records. Participants will also learn how the archives can complement online genealogy resources by providing historical context and unique materials that cannot be found on the internet.

The workshop is open to all experience levels, from first-time researchers to those with years of experience, and has a $5 fee per person. The DeKalb County History Center is located at 1730 N. Main Street in Sycamore. Visit dekalbcountyhistory.org to register or for additional information. The class size is limited to 20, and registration is required.
