Mayfield Church Summer Stop

Mayfield Congregational Church, UCC, in Sycamore will hold a “Summer Stop” on July 19 from
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at 28405 Church Road, Sycamore, IL. The event is free and open to the
public.

Visitors can tour the church sanctuary, enjoy ice cream sundaes, and watch the documentary
about the Underground Railroad in DeKalb County, “Wade in the Water,” written and directed
by James Macon, which will be on view continually throughout the day.

In addition, attendees can visit the Mayfield Monarch Waystation, a pollinator garden certified
by the Illinois Audubon Society as a Bird and Butterfly Sanctuary and registered with Monarch
Watch, a national conservation network.

Country Road Greenhouses of Rochelle will provide a popup native plant sale so that visitors
can try plants for butterflies and other pollinators in their own yards.

Founded by abolitionists in 1860, this historic church was a stop on the Underground Railroad
in the 19 th century. The cross in the sanctuary is made of wood from the original timber-frame
structure, revealed during a renovation made necessary by high-wind damage in 2012.
