“Courthouse Guards” DeKalb County Soldiers and Sailors Monument

The DeKalb County History Center invites the public to attend “Courthouse Guards” on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. at the DeKalb County History Center, 1730 N. Main Street, featuring Dennis R. Maher of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. This engaging presentation will explore the rich history and enduring legacy of the DeKalb County Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

Standing proudly in front of the courthouse since June 1897, the monument has been a silent witness to generations of county life, greeting thousands as they approached to plead their cases, file important paperwork, or celebrate a marriage. Since the early 1960s, it has even watched over pumpkins during the annual courthouse display.

Maher will share the story behind the monument’s planning and construction in the years following the Civil War, a testament to the county’s deep respect for those who served. The 2,391 men from DeKalb County who fought in 15 regiments and took part in many major battles are honored through this enduring memorial. Built with the understanding that freedom is not free, the monument continues to stand resolutely through storms, winters, and the passage of time.
