April Brown Bag – Sneak Peek of “Food” exhibit

The DeKalb County History Center is one of five organizations in the United States hosting the exhibit “Food: Gathering Around the Table” in collaboration with the Smithsonian. While the exhibit does not open until June 1, those who attend the Brown Bag Lunch program on April 4 will get a sneak peek of the exhibit, hear about county-wide stories, programming ideas, and a preview of objects on display.
The exhibit opening panel states: “The food on the American table may not define exactly what we are as a nation, but the traditions surrounding our foods speak volumes about who we are. Rooted in centuries of borrowing and sharing, food traditions are staggeringly diverse and constantly evolving. The intersection of cultures in America is perhaps the most important factor in the mix that is America’s food.
‘American food’ defies definition, except to say that it is what people in America harvest, prepare, and eat. There is no real recipe, just a few key ingredients constantly stirred by time.”
The History Center uses the text created by the Smithsonian and provides local examples from DeKalb County to help visitors connect to national experiences. During the Brown Bag Lunch program, Michelle Donahoe, History Center executive director, will walk through the main sections of the exhibit and show images and objects that will be highlighted: “There is a wealth of information related to DeKalb county’s history and food – everything from church cookbooks to food technology, farming, food insecurity, and of course food festivals.” She continued, “Then, with programming we can take a deeper dive into these topics.” Visitors are also encouraged to bring a favorite recipe that might be included in the exhibit.
The Brown Bag Lunch program is held on the first Thursday of the month at 12:00 as a collaborative event between the DeKalb County History Center and Ellwood House Museum. The April 4 talk will be at the DeKalb County History Center, 1730 N. Main Street in Sycamore. For more information visit dekalbcountyhistory.org or call 815-895-5762. The Brown Bag Lunch series is generously sponsored by the Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture fund.
